We are often told how tenkara’s simplicity is so wonderful (and makes it so easy to pick up)…And this is absolutely true…BUT…
It also hides the fact that somebody had to cut a clear path through the incredibly complicated world of rivers, fish and food-webs to “boil down” and achieve that simplicity. We can now benefit from learning a handful of key ideas and techniques that WORK (and are beautifully elegant with a bit of practice). That simple set of rules and tactics only came after the most talented folks managed to push through the overwhelming complexity and work out the smaller set of things that are actually important.
So, you may know that I’m a freshwater ecologist by training – and if you (as I urge you to do) spend the next three minutes watching this lightening quick video presentation – you can probably see how the way that I naturally tend to see the world is a Wonderful match for how tenkara relates to successful fly fishing…
