Although a whole variety of unweighted AND weighted flies are used in “honryu” (powerful main rivers) in Japan – we’ve taken a practical decision to keep our weighted flies restricted to the honryu selection. This is because in shallower/smaller keiryu streams, it is much less common to need a weighted fly. But in any situation that you need a tungsten bead to fish either western nymphing methods – or full on Japanese honryu style – these are very reliable patterns. You can even combine them in a competition nymphing/tenkara presentation in a similar way to anglers like the wildly successful Takahash-san. Winter nymphing is a very obvious application!
